[...] Fact: This myth floors me. People with any form of Diabetes need to eat a very nutritious diet, but not one that is severely restricted. I will admit that my research and personal experience with diet cause me to disagree with the typical regimen prescribed by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The ADA encourages people with Diabetes to eat high amounts of carbohydrates and to avoid fats, stating that carbohydrates are essential for energy. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a client come to see me and claim their dietitian is trying to kill them. People with Diabetes can eat carbohydrates, but I encourage them to primarily eat low-glycemic carbohydrates that don’t require large amounts of insulin. Insulin is a fat-storage hormone, so weight loss is often dependent upon eating in a fashion that allows the body to produce less insulin. Eating in this manner may also improve insulin resistance, as a lower amount of insulin in the blood stream may help the body’s cells not be “overwhelmed” by it. For more information on effective eating styles for controlling glucose levels, please read: Why Mainstream Diabetes Diets Often Fail. [...]

Hi, Rosemary. I apologize I am not sure what I can recommend that might help. It is possible to permanently remove toenails, but that is an extreme option. I encourage you to continue discussing various options with your doctor. I wish you the very best!

Hi, Cindy. That's a great question! I agree that athletes way back then didn't take as many supplements. However, they didn't have the options available that we do today. Additionally, their food contained more nutrients than ours does and they weren't exposed to all the toxins we currently have in our environment and our food supply. In my practice, I try to avoid supplements unless they are absolutely necessary. I NEVER recommend taking more than 5 at a time. That's just too much for a body to handle. I hope you will discuss your concerns with your coach and ask him or her to create a plan that is based more on food and lifestyle than on supplementation. Please keep me posted on your progress!

Hi, Kate. I'm so sorry to hear about your challenges. I would be happy to help; however, I cannot provide advice to anyone who is not a client due to liability issues. If you would like to schedule a consultation, please feel free to call me at 317.489.0909. In the meantime, it sounds as if you may be taking too much progesterone. Please reconsider the dosage. I usually recommend ladies start at 1/4 of the dosage recommended on the package and then work up VERY slowly if needed.

Hi, Chrissy. I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles. It may not be much of an encouragement, but please know you are not alone. My encouragement to you is to insist your endo run a FULL thyroid panel (Free T3, Free T4, TSH, TPO and Reverse T3) and discuss adding T3 to your regimen. Unfortunately, many endos do not believe there's any need to combine T3 therapy with T4. If yours is not, please find a doctor in your area who is knowledgeable about thyroid therapies and who will prescribe a combination of both hormones. I also strongly encourage you to read the book, "Stop the Thyroid Madness" - http://amzn.to/NPXCH0. It provides detailed information on blood tests, thyroid hormones and more.

Please know you CAN feel better. You just need to find a doctor who will run the right tests and prescribe the correct medication. I also encourage you to find online thyroid support groups. Most of those groups are great sources of information (taken with a grain of salt) on finding help and finally eliminating your symptoms. Keep fighting and keep searching!

I feel like wanting to cry reading all of these personal struggles with any form of thyroid disease. I had been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and then Graves back in 2010. I opted for total thyroidectomy (subsequently they found a small papilary carcinoma and removed it) . Ever since, its been a struggle for myself. I have to fight for energy during the day, I constantly feel like I need to eat something, even if I'd already eaten, I've gained at least 30+ pounds and its ever harder to get rid of. Because of everything going on (hoping for a new job and trying to have the energy to do anything), I've been feeling like I've been having wicked mood swings and just wanting to cry all the time. Not to mention a much lowered self esteem due to hypo weight gain. My next endo appointment, I'm going to talk to him about a T3 suppliment to my levothyroxine, or even an anti depressant. I'm feeling at my wits end.
